The unique demands of martial arts create a complex physiological picture. Unlike linear activities such as running or cycling, martial arts involve explosive, multi-directional movements, high-impact forces, and sustained isometric contractions. For strikers, this involves both delivering and receiving blows. The repetitive shock of hitting pads or a heavy bag travels through the small bones of the hands and wrists, up through the arms and into the shoulder girdle. Receiving strikes, even when blocked, causes contusions and deep tissue bruising. For grapplers, the impact is different but no less significant. A forceful throw in judo results in a high-energy landing, which must be absorbed by the entire body, even with correct break-falling technique. The constant jostling for position and the application of takedowns create a low-grade, cumulative impact on the skeletal system and joints.
Secondly, there is the matter of sustained and explosive muscular effort. Grappling arts are defined by periods of intense isometric and eccentric contraction. Holding a dominant position, resisting a submission attempt, or maintaining a grip involves muscles contracting forcefully without changing length for extended periods. This type of effort can lead to significant muscle fatigue and metabolic stress. This is interspersed with explosive, concentric movements like a powerful takedown or a rapid transition. Normal training soreness, or DOMS, typically feels like a dull, diffuse ache in the muscles that were worked. It might make movement stiff and uncomfortable, but it does not usually involve sharp, localised pain. It tends to peak a day or two after training and then gradually subsides. You should still have a full range of motion in your joints, even if it is uncomfortable.
Pain that signals a potential injury has different characteristics. You should seek a medical assessment from a doctor or physiotherapist if you experience any of the following:
- Sharp, stabbing, or shooting pain, especially during a specific movement.
- Pain that is localised to a specific point on a joint, ligament, or bone, rather than a broad muscle belly.
- Noticeable swelling, redness, or heat around a joint.
- A locking, catching, or giving-way sensation in a joint, such as the knee or shoulder.
- Pain that gets worse with activity instead of warming up and easing off.
- Pain that persists for more than a week without improvement or disrupts your sleep.
- Any loss of strength or range of motion that does not resolve with rest.

What the research shows

Researchers are exploring its effects on muscle soreness, inflammation, and performance, but the picture is complex and many studies have limitations.
Several studies have investigated whether cold therapy can reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). A comparative trial from 2011 looked at highly-trained runners who completed a muscle-damaging running protocol. The researchers compared a group using whole-body cold therapy with groups using far-infrared or passive recovery. They reported that the cold therapy group experienced a greater reduction in perceived pain and better recovery of muscular performance over the subsequent days [3]. However, a comprehensive 2015 Cochrane review, which analysed multiple smaller trials on muscle soreness, concluded that while some evidence suggests cold therapy may reduce DOMS, the quality of many of the included studies was low [7]. The reviewers highlighted issues such as small sample sizes and the difficulty of "blinding" participants, as it is impossible to hide from someone whether they are receiving a cold treatment.
Other research has focused on the physiological markers of recovery. A 2017 literature review noted that while the effects on performance are still debated, many studies point towards cryotherapy having an influence on inflammatory processes [6]. Furthermore, much of the research has been conducted on endurance athletes like runners, and the findings may not be perfectly transferable to the unique combination of stresses faced by a martial artist. Therefore, while the current body of research provides a plausible physiological basis for how cold therapy might support recovery and shows some encouraging results, it is not yet definitive. The science is evolving, and more high-quality, large-scale research is needed.
Integrating Cold Therapy into Your Training Regimen
If you decide to explore whole-body cold therapy, it is best viewed as one component of a holistic recovery strategy, not a standalone solution. Its integration should be thoughtful and timed to match your training demands. For many athletes, including those in the active martial arts community here in Memmingen and the wider Allgäu region, the most logical time to use cold therapy is after a particularly demanding training session. This could be following a long sparring session, a high-intensity conditioning workout, or a session focused on heavy throws and takedowns. Using it in this context aims to kick-start the recovery process and potentially mitigate the soreness you would expect to feel one or two days later.
Another strategic time to use cryotherapy is during periods of intensified training, such as a training camp in preparation for a competition or grading. When you are training multiple times a day or with increased volume and intensity, your body's capacity for recovery is under immense pressure. Incorporating regular cold therapy sessions, perhaps two or three times over the course of a week, may help you manage the cumulative fatigue and inflammation, allowing you to maintain a higher quality of training throughout the camp.
It is generally not recommended to use whole-body cold therapy immediately before training. The goal of a warm-up is to increase muscle temperature and elasticity, while cold application does the opposite. Listen to your body. There is no one-size-fits-all frequency. Some practitioners may find a session once a week is sufficient to support their regular training load, while others may use it more frequently during peak periods and less so during lighter training phases. The key is to treat it as a tool to support your body's natural healing rhythms, complementing, not replacing, adequate sleep, a nutritious diet, and proper rest days.
Precautions and Contraindications
While whole-body cold therapy is a non-invasive application, the extreme temperature places a significant physiological demand on the body. Therefore, it is not suitable for everyone. Your safety is our highest priority, and a thorough check for contraindications is a mandatory part of the process before your first session.
Absolute contraindications, meaning you should not use whole-body cold therapy, include:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Heart attack within the last six months
- Decompensating diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory system
- Unstable angina pectoris
- Pacemaker
- Peripheral arterial occlusive disease
- Venous thrombosis (blood clots)
- Acute febrile respiratory conditions
- Severe anaemia
- Cold allergy (such as cold urticaria)
- Seizure disorders
- Bacterial and viral skin infections
- Raynaud's syndrome
- Pregnancy
It is imperative that you disclose any and all known medical conditions before undergoing a session. Even if a condition is not on this list, it may require consultation with your doctor. During the session itself, you will wear minimal, dry clothing (such as shorts for men, shorts and a top for women), along with gloves, socks, and shoes to protect your extremities. How often should a martial artist use cryotherapy?
This depends entirely on your training volume, intensity, and individual response. For managing general training load, once or twice a week might be beneficial. During an intense competition camp, you might increase the frequency to every other day. It is best to start slowly and listen to your body's feedback.
Does cold therapy replace an ice bath?
While both use cold to stimulate a physiological response, they are different experiences.
