- Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders, or in and around the ear.
- Difficulty or discomfort while chewing.
- A clicking, popping, or grating sound in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth.
- Occasional "locking" of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth.
- Headaches, often mimicking tension headaches or even migraines.
- Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.
- Dizziness.
Because these symptoms can overlap with other medical conditions, it can be a challenging journey to find a clear diagnosis and an effective management plan. The pain is not always visible, but its impact on daily life can be profound, creating a constant, low level source of stress and discomfort.
Unravelling the Causes: A Multifaceted Puzzle
The precise cause of a person's TMD is often difficult to pinpoint. In many cases, it appears to result from a combination of factors rather than a single event. Understanding these potential contributors is the first step towards managing them.
One of the most common culprits is bruxism, the technical term for clenching or grinding your teeth. Many people do this unconsciously, especially during sleep or periods of high stress. This sustained tension places immense strain on the jaw muscles and the TMJ itself, leading to inflammation and pain.
Stress and anxiety are significant players. When you are stressed, your body tenses up, and this includes the muscles of your face and jaw. For some, this becomes a chronic pattern, perpetuating a cycle of tension and pain. Your posture also plays a role. Slouching forward at a desk for hours can strain the muscles in your neck and shoulders, which in turn can affect the position and function of your jaw.
In other instances, TMD can be related to arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, affecting the joint itself. A direct injury to the jaw, head, or neck, such as from a fall or whiplash, can also damage the joint and trigger long term problems. Even dental issues, like a misaligned bite, can contribute by causing an imbalance in how the jaw moves and closes. Acknowledging this complexity is crucial, as it underscores why a one size fits all solution is rarely effective and why professional medical assessment is always the necessary first step.
The Path to Diagnosis and Established Medical Care

How Whole-Body Cold Therapy Works Physiologically
Whole-body cold therapy involves spending a very short amount of time, typically around three minutes, in a chamber cooled to extremely low temperatures, such as the -110 °C environment at our studio in Memmingen. The aim is not to freeze the body but to trigger a powerful, systemic physiological response to the cold stimulus.
When your skin is exposed to this intense cold, temperature receptors send urgent signals to your brain. The body's primary survival response is to protect its core temperature. It does this through profound vasoconstriction, which is a rapid narrowing of the blood vessels in the skin and peripheral tissues. This process redirects blood flow away from the limbs and towards the vital organs.
While your body is working to conserve heat, other complex processes are initiated. The intense cold stimulus is thought to have an effect on nerve signalling. It may temporarily slow the conduction velocity of pain-signalling nerves, which could contribute to a sensation of analgesia, or pain relief. Many guests report a feeling of reduced pain and an invigorating sense of wellbeing immediately after a session.
After you leave the cold chamber and return to normal temperatures, the body begins to warm up again. This leads to vasodilation, a widening of the blood vessels, as warm, oxygenated blood flows back into the peripheral tissues. This reperfusion process is central to the application of cold therapy in sports recovery and is an area of active research. The focus of this research often lies in how these physiological shifts might influence inflammatory markers and the body's overall state of stress and recovery. It is these mechanisms that are being explored for their potential supportive benefits in conditions where inflammation and pain are key components, such as some forms of TMD.
What the research shows
The direct application of whole-body cold therapy for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is not yet a well-researched area. Therefore, we must look at studies in related fields to understand the potential mechanisms and be very clear about the limitations of drawing conclusions. The current body of evidence provides some interesting physiological insights, but it does not allow for any definitive claims about treating jaw pain.
A key area of interest is inflammation. A systematic review of studies on cryotherapy in inflammatory rheumatic diseases concluded that cold applications appeared to reduce pain [2]. While TMD is not always an inflammatory rheumatic disease, inflammation of the joint capsule (capsulitis) or the surrounding muscles (myositis) is a common feature. The findings in related inflammatory conditions suggest a plausible mechanism for symptom relief, but research specifically on the TMJ is needed to confirm this.
Other studies have investigated how whole-body cold therapy affects specific biological markers in the body. One study conducted on healthy men observed changes in the level of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a protein that plays a complex role in the inflammatory response, following a series of ten cold sessions [5]. Similarly, another investigation, also in healthy men, found that a course of whole-body cryostimulation was associated with a reduction in markers of oxidative stress, a process linked to inflammation and cellular damage [4]. These studies are intriguing because they point towards systemic physiological changes in response to cold. However, their limitations are significant. They were conducted on small groups of healthy young men, and the results cannot be directly extrapolated to individuals, male or female, who are experiencing the chronic pain and inflammation of TMD.
Further research into conditions involving chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia, may also offer some context. One clinical investigation compared the effects of a program including whole-body cryotherapy against a program without it in patients with fibromyalgia, a condition often characterised by widespread pain and fatigue that can co-occur with TMD [1]. The study explored outcomes related to pain and quality of life. Again, while fibromyalgia and TMD are different conditions, this research shows that whole-body cold therapy is being formally investigated for its role in managing complex chronic pain syndromes. The findings are preliminary and require larger, more robust trials. The transferability of these results to TMD remains a question for future research to answer.
In essence, the current research landscape offers clues, not conclusions. It shows that whole-body cold therapy triggers significant physiological responses, including those related to blood flow, pain signalling, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress [2, 4, 5]. What is missing is direct evidence from large, controlled trials specifically studying its effects on a diverse population of people with TMD over a long period.
Integrating Cold Therapy into Your Management Plan

- Heart attack within the last six months or other significant cardiovascular disease
- Unstable angina
- Pacemaker
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a history of blood clots
- Seizure disorders
- Raynaud's syndrome
- Acute febrile illness or infection
- Cold allergy (cold urticaria)
- Pregnancy

Will my face and jaw get cold enough to make a difference?
The primary effects of whole-body cold therapy are systemic, meaning they affect the entire body. The brain reacts to the skin cooling across your whole body [7], initiating responses like changes in blood flow and nerve signalling that are not confined to one area. The goal is to trigger this central response, which then influences the body as a whole.
Why is the temperature so low, at -110 °C?
The extremely low temperature, achieved with vortex cooling technology, allows for a very rapid and efficient cooling of the skin's surface without damaging tissue [8]. This intensity is what triggers the strong physiological reflexes that are the objective of the therapy. It is a very different and more powerful stimulus than a local ice pack.
