By potentially helping to modulate the body's overall inflammatory state, cryotherapy may contribute to calming the underlying driver of the itch.

Finally, the effect on blood vessels plays a role. The cold causes immediate and powerful vasoconstriction, where the blood vessels in the skin and peripheral tissues narrow dramatically to conserve core body heat [3]. This process could theoretically reduce the local delivery and leakage of inflammatory and itch-producing substances into the skin tissue. Following the session, as you warm up, the opposite occurs: reactive vasodilation. Blood rushes back into the skin, increasing circulation, which may help to deliver oxygen and nutrients and clear away metabolic byproducts.

What the research shows

When evaluating the potential of whole-body cold therapy, it is vital to look at the available research with a clear and critical eye. The science in this area is evolving, and it is important to understand both what has been observed and what the limitations of those observations are. The primary focus of most research has been on athletes and recovery, not directly on dermatological conditions, so we must be cautious when inferring potential benefits.

Several studies have investigated the effect of whole-body cold on markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. One review of the literature noted that a key application for athletes is the modulation of the inflammatory response post-exercise [4]. A study involving healthy men who underwent ten sessions of cryostimulation found a decrease in the pro-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin-6 (IL-6) [7]. IL-6 is a molecule involved in the body's inflammatory cascade. The authors suggested that repeated cold exposure might help the body adapt and regulate its inflammatory response. Similarly, another review highlighted that the rationale for using whole-body cold therapy often centres on its potential to reduce secondary inflammatory damage and oedema [3]. Therefore, while the existing research into inflammatory and neural mechanisms provides a compelling theoretical basis, it does not constitute proof of efficacy for treating itching.

Your Cold Therapy Session: The Memmingen Experience

You will then change into minimal, dry clothing; for men, this is typically shorts, and for women, shorts and a top. We provide gloves, socks, shoes, and a headband to protect your extremities, where the cold is felt most intensely. You will first enter a pre-chamber set to around -60°C for about 30 seconds to allow your body to begin to acclimatise. Then, you step into the main chamber, where the air temperature is a stable -110°C.

Inside, you will walk around slowly for the duration of the session, which is typically between two and three minutes. The cold is dry and surprisingly tolerable, often described as a tingling or pins-and-needles sensation on the skin rather than the biting damp cold of a winter day. Our staff will be in constant visual and verbal contact with you throughout. After your time is up, you step out and begin to warm up naturally. Many people feel an immediate rush of warmth and a sense of invigoration.

Cold Therapy Safety: Is It Right for You?

While generally safe when conducted professionally, whole-body cold therapy is not suitable for everyone. A thorough check for contraindications is essential. For individuals struggling with itching, certain precautions are particularly important. You should not undergo a session if you have:

  • Open, weeping or infected skin lesions. The extreme cold is not intended for broken skin.
  • A known allergy to cold (cold urticaria), which can ironically cause an itchy, hive-like rash upon exposure to cold.

  • Raynaud's syndrome, a condition causing an extreme reaction in fingers and toes to cold.
