You will change into appropriate attire: minimal, dry clothing like shorts and a top for men, and similar or a bathing suit for women. We provide you with gloves, socks, shoes, a headband to cover your ears, and a face mask to warm the air you breathe.
The experience involves stepping into our cryotherapy chamber, which uses vortex cooling technology to maintain a stable and comfortable environment, despite the extreme temperature of -110°C. The air is completely dry, which makes the temperature much more tolerable than, for example, plunging into cold water. You will spend about three minutes in the chamber, during which time you can move gently on the spot. A trained operator is with you for the entire duration, communicating with you through a window and intercom.
Immediately after stepping out, you may experience a pleasant tingling sensation as your body rapidly re-warms. Will whole-body cold therapy make me lose the lipoedema fat?
No. It is very important to be clear that cryotherapy will not remove the abnormal fat cells associated with lipoedema. Its potential benefit is in the management of symptoms like pain, inflammation, and the sensation of heaviness, not in reducing the volume of the limbs.
What is the difference between whole-body cold therapy and an ice bath?
The key differences are the temperature and the medium. Our chamber uses dry, gaseous air at -110°C, while an ice bath uses wet cold at around 8-12°C. The dry cold is often perceived as more comfortable and allows for a much lower temperature, which triggers a more profound and systemic physiological response in a shorter time (three minutes vs 10-15 minutes).
I have poor circulation; is whole-body cold therapy safe?
This depends on the nature of your circulatory issue. The intense cold causes a strong vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) followed by vasodilation (widening). This can be a beneficial "workout" for the vascular system. However, for severe diagnosed conditions like advanced Raynaud's syndrome or peripheral artery disease, it is contraindicated. No, a medical referral is not required as this is a wellness and recovery service. Can cold therapy really help with the constant pain?
