To grasp the concept of resilience, you first need to understand how your body handles stress. The primary players are the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system. For around three minutes, you stand in a cold chamber where the air is cooled to a dry -110 °C. The use of advanced vortex cooling ensures an even and rapid temperature drop on the skin.
The immediate physiological reaction is dramatic. To protect your core temperature, the blood vessels in your skin and extremities constrict powerfully (vasoconstriction), drawing blood towards the vital organs in your torso. As soon as you step out of the chamber and into normal room temperature, the opposite effect occurs. Your blood vessels dilate rapidly (vasodilation), and the freshly oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood that was held in your core rushes back out to your limbs and skin. This rapid cycle of vasoconstriction and vasodilation is like a workout for your entire vascular system. More importantly, it is a deliberate activation and deactivation of your stress response. The connection between mood and resilience is strong, and some research has explored cryotherapy in this context. A randomised controlled trial published in 2020 looked at the effects of whole-body cryotherapy as an add-on to standard pharmacological treatment for depression [2]. The participants underwent a series of cold applications, and the study suggested that this adjunct therapy could be a beneficial element of a comprehensive treatment plan for depressive disorders. An earlier, smaller study from 2008 also investigated whole-body cold therapy as a supportive treatment for both depressive and anxiety disorders, finding it to be well-tolerated and potentially beneficial [1]. These studies provide a basis for considering how cold application might support the psychological aspects of resilience.
On a physiological level, resilience is linked to the body's ability to manage inflammation and oxidative stress. A 2010 study examined the effects of ten sessions of cryostimulation on healthy men [4]. Therefore, while the current body of research is encouraging, it must be interpreted with caution.

Absolutely not. Whole-body cold therapy is considered an adjunct, or add-on, service. You must never stop or alter any prescribed medication without consulting the prescribing physician. It may be used as a supportive element within a comprehensive treatment plan that is managed by your doctor.
What is the difference between this and an ice bath?
Whole-body cold therapy exposes your body to much colder temperatures (around -110 °C vs 8-12 °C in an ice bath) for a much shorter time. The cold is also dry, which triggers a different skin-receptor response than wet cold. This allows for a powerful systemic reaction without the prolonged discomfort and potential tissue risk of a long ice bath.
How quickly will I notice a difference in my resilience?
Responses vary. Some guests report an immediate mood lift and better sleep after just one session. The cumulative benefits for physiological resilience, such as an improved stress response, are typically experienced over a series of sessions. Consistency is more important than intensity.
