We can, however, outline some general approaches based on common goals.
- For General Wellness and Cold Adaptation: If your primary aim is to boost your general sense of wellbeing, improve your resilience to stress, and harness the adaptive benefits of cold, a consistent but less intensive schedule is often effective. Many of our guests start with two to three sessions per week for the first two or three weeks. This allows the body to become accustomed to the unique stimulus. After this initial phase, a maintenance schedule of one or two sessions per week is often sufficient to sustain the feeling of vitality and improved recovery that many report.
- For Athletic Recovery: Athletes operating at a high level of intensity place significant stress on their bodies, leading to micro-trauma in muscles and a subsequent inflammatory response. For them, cryotherapy is a tool for managing recovery. The frequency is often tied to their training schedule. During a particularly demanding training block or leading up to a competition, an athlete might use the cold chamber three to five times a week, or even daily for a short period, often after their main training session. In a less intense phase or during the off-season, the frequency might drop back to one or two sessions per week to support general conditioning.
- For Supporting Chronic Conditions: When using whole-body cold to support the management of symptoms associated with chronic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, the approach is often different again. It is crucial to state that cold therapy is a complementary measure and must never replace the medical care, diagnosis, and treatment plan provided by your doctor or specialist. Some research protocols have explored an initial "loading" phase, involving a series of 10 to 20 sessions in relatively quick succession, such as daily or every other day, over two to three weeks [2, 3]. The intention is to provide a more intensive stimulus to potentially influence inflammatory and pain pathways. Following this, a maintenance phase of one to three sessions per week may be adopted to help sustain any perceived benefits. This approach must be guided by your medical professional and how you feel.

Cold Therapy for Inflammatory Conditions

These conditions are characterised by a dysregulated immune system that mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, leading to persistent inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints and other parts of the body.
Established medical treatment for these diseases involves medications designed to control the immune response and reduce inflammation. Whole-body cold therapy is in no way a substitute for this essential medical care. Instead, it is being explored as a physical therapy modality that may help manage symptoms alongside standard treatment. A systematic review of studies on this topic noted that cryotherapy is used in this context, often with the aim of reducing pain and inflammation [3]. In the context of athletic recovery, a comprehensive review of the literature highlights that whole-body cold therapy is widely used by athletes to manage the inflammation and muscle soreness that follow intense exercise [7]. The proposed mechanisms include the reduction of inflammatory processes and a decrease in the perception of pain. The review also notes that the effects can be highly variable, depending on the specific protocol used, the type of exercise, and the individual athlete. Another critical appraisal of the evidence points out that many studies in sports medicine lack a true placebo control (as it is difficult to blind someone to whether they have been in a very cold chamber), which makes it challenging to separate the physiological effects from psychological or placebo effects [6].
For specific health conditions, research is also emerging. A systematic review of cryotherapy's use in inflammatory rheumatic diseases concluded that it is often used as an add-on therapy, with many small studies reporting positive effects on pain and disease activity [3]. However, the review also stressed the need for larger, more methodologically robust trials to establish clear guidelines. Similarly, a study on patients with multiple sclerosis found that a course of ten whole-body cold sessions was associated with a significant reduction in self-reported fatigue and an improvement in functional status [2]. The authors suggest this could be a valuable complementary therapy, but again, the study was relatively small and the observation period was short.

- Acute febrile illness or infection
