- Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies: The presence of these antibodies is the hallmark of Hashimoto's. Their existence shows that the immune system is targeting the thyroid gland.
The standard medical treatment for hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's is hormone replacement therapy. This involves taking a daily dose of a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine. The medication replaces the hormone your thyroid can no longer produce, restoring adequate levels in your body and reversing the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Finding the correct dosage is a careful process, managed by your doctor through regular blood tests, to mimic your body's natural hormone production as closely as possible. For the vast majority of people, this treatment is lifelong.

Therefore, we can only cautiously infer potential mechanisms that might be relevant; we cannot draw direct conclusions about its efficacy for Hashimoto's.
A key area of interest is inflammation. A 2017 review of literature on athletes noted that whole-body cryotherapy is used with the aim of reducing inflammatory responses and muscle soreness after strenuous exercise [1]. Studies included in this review have looked at inflammatory markers like Interleukin-6 (IL-6). For instance, one study on healthy men observed that a series of ten cryostimulation sessions appeared to influence levels of IL-6 and the body's overall antioxidative status [8]. The authors suggest that repeated cold exposures might trigger adaptive mechanisms that help regulate both inflammatory and oxidative processes. However, it is crucial to remember that inflammation from exercise is very different from the chronic, autoimmune inflammation of Hashimoto's.
Another relevant area is oxidative stress. A 2016 study investigated the impact of ten whole-body cryostimulation sessions on oxidative stress markers in a group of healthy men [2]. The researchers found that the series of cold exposures led to an increase in the body's total antioxidative status, suggesting an enhanced ability to neutralise harmful free radicals. While the results showed some changes, the mechanisms are complex and the clinical significance for conditions like hypothyroidism remains to be established.
The limitations of the current body of research are clear. Many studies involve small numbers of participants, are conducted over short periods, and often lack a control or placebo group, making it difficult to definitively attribute the observed effects to the cold therapy itself [6]. Furthermore, the subjects are almost always healthy and young, not a population with chronic autoimmune disease. The research provides a fascinating physiological basis for why cold therapy might support well-being, but it does not constitute proof of a therapeutic benefit for Hashimoto's.
Your First Cold Therapy Session: What to Expect
The idea of stepping into a -110 °C chamber can be daunting, but the process is straightforward, quick, and supervised. When you visit our studio, we first ensure it is safe for you. The cold is intense but very dry, which is quite different from the damp, bone-chilling cold you might experience on a winter day in the Allgäu. You will be encouraged to move gently and turn slowly on the spot. Our trained staff will be with you, communicating with you throughout the entire session.
Immediately after stepping out, you may feel a tingling sensation as your circulation returns to normal. Most people report a powerful feeling of alertness, clarity, and invigoration. Important Precautions
Whole-body cold therapy is a powerful stimulus and is not suitable for everyone. It is essential to prioritise safety. You must consult your doctor before beginning any new wellness practice, especially if you have a known medical condition like Hashimoto's.

How many sessions are recommended?
