It is crucial to state upfront that there are currently no specific clinical trials examining the direct effects of whole-body cold therapy on PMS or PMDD symptoms. The existing body of research has focused primarily on its use in sports medicine for athlete recovery and in the management of certain chronic inflammatory conditions. Therefore, any potential benefits for cyclical complaints must be cautiously inferred from these studies, focusing on the underlying physiological mechanisms rather than direct evidence for this specific condition.
Research has extensively investigated the influence of whole-body cold therapy on inflammatory markers. A review of literature on athletes notes that cold exposure may influence the levels of cytokines, which are proteins that signal and regulate inflammation [1]. For instance, some studies have observed changes in pro-inflammatory markers like Interleukin-6 (IL-6) following cold sessions. One study conducted on healthy men undergoing ten cryostimulation sessions found that while IL-6 levels initially increased immediately after the first session (a typical response to a stressor), they were lower at rest after the full series of ten sessions compared to the baseline [8]. Since prostaglandins, central to menstrual pain, are key drivers of inflammation, a modality that may help to systemically modulate the inflammatory response could, theoretically, be supportive.
Another area of interest is oxidative stress, a state of imbalance between damaging free radicals and the body's ability to counteract them with antioxidants. Furthermore, many study protocols lack a true placebo control, making it difficult to separate the physiological effects of the cold from a potential placebo effect [6]. The observation periods are often short, and the long-term effects of repeated cold therapy are still being investigated. Therefore, while the existing research into cold therapy's effects on inflammation and oxidative stress is promising and physiologically plausible, it serves only as a pointer towards potential mechanisms of action, not as proof of efficacy for PMS.
How Cold Therapy Can Fit Into Your Monthly Routine
Integrating whole-body cold therapy into your wellness plan requires a thoughtful and individualised approach. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol. The key is to listen to your body and observe how you feel.
Many women find it most beneficial to schedule sessions during the luteal phase, the one to two weeks before their period begins. Your Session at Kryo Memmingen: Safety and Expectations
Your well-being is our highest priority. A session of whole-body cold therapy is a powerful experience, and it is important to know what to expect and to be aware of the necessary precautions.
Upon arrival at our studio, you will be guided through the entire process. You will change into protective clothing, which typically consists of swimwear or underwear, socks, gloves, and a headband to protect your ears. The session itself takes place in a specialised cold chamber, where the temperature is maintained at a constant -110 °C. The cold is very dry, which makes it feel much more tolerable than, for example, plunging into icy water.
You will spend between two and a half to three minutes in the chamber, during which you can move gently on the spot. A trained operator is present at all times, monitoring you and communicating with you throughout the session. Immediately after exiting the chamber, you will likely feel a tingling sensation on your skin as your circulation returns to normal. Many people report an immediate feeling of alertness and an uplift in mood.
Crucially, whole-body cold therapy is not suitable for everyone. It is a wellness service, and a medical assessment is vital if you have any pre-existing health conditions. Contraindications include:
- Severe cardiovascular diseases (e.g., recent heart attack, unstable angina, uncontrolled hypertension)
- Peripheral artery disease
- Raynaud's syndrome
- Pregnancy
- Severe anaemia
- Cold-activated asthma
- Acute febrile illness
For women with very heavy periods and a risk of anaemia, it is wise to consult a doctor before beginning a series of sessions. Can cold therapy replace my pain medication or other treatments?

The primary differences are the temperature, the medium, and the duration.
