Your body's primary survival instinct is to protect its core temperature. It does this through profound vasoconstriction, where the blood vessels in your skin and extremities narrow dramatically, shunting blood towards the vital organs in your core.
While your blood is circulating centrally, it is enriched with oxygen. Upon exiting the chamber, the opposite process occurs: vasodilation. Your blood vessels expand, and this oxygen-rich blood flows back to the periphery, creating a sensation of warmth and flushing the tissues.
This process also stimulates the nervous system and is thought to trigger the release of various molecules, including endorphins (which can elevate mood) and noradrenaline (which can increase alertness and reduce the perception of pain). Furthermore, the exposure to extreme cold is a form of physiological stress, and repeated, controlled exposure may lead to adaptive changes in the body, particularly in how it manages inflammation and oxidative stress. After your initial consultation and safety check, you will change into protective clothing: socks, gloves, a headband to cover your ears, and a face mask. You will then enter the chamber for your session, which lasts between two and three-and-a-half minutes. The air is completely dry, which makes the extreme temperature feel surprisingly tolerable, more like a deep, penetrating cold than the damp chill of a winter's day.
